2003 Expy issues

I'm working on my daughters 03 Expy (166k mi, 5.4) and having several issues.

1. When ignition is turned off, the radio stays on.
2. The interior lights don't come on.
3. Heated/cool seats not working.
4. Throwing codes when running P0455 & P0174
5. Miles to empty readout keeps jumping back & forth while driving.

I'm starting to wonder if this thing is having ECM issues and trying to get some more input.

I've already clean the PCV and checked the vac lines.

I'm sure there's more issues that I can't think of at this moment.

Thanks for your time and I'm trying to get some more info before I start throwing coins at this thing.

I guess you mean when you turn the key off and open the driver's door the radio stays on, and the interior lights don't come on? That's just a bad door jamb switch in the driver's door. Common problem. Some people have luck spraying the door lock mechanism with a solvent cleaner (like brake cleaner or PB Blaster...) but in the end you usually end up replacing the switch. There are other posts on it available. When you open the passenger door does the radio turn off and the lights come on ?
The other DTC codes sound like a vacuum leak. You'll have to give the engine a good looking over and maybe spray some carb cleaner around the intake or suspected leaking hoses. A vacuum leak will play havoc with the computer.

Correct Mike. Thanks, I'll look into these suggestions. Would it be possible when all the doors to suddenly act that way?

Alloro, my daughter said it was 50+ mile swing from miles to empty. It would drop all of a sudden then later on back to close to where it was before.

Hmm, possibly the connection to the fuel level sender is going in and out, or the sender itself is faulty. This would cause the computer to recalculate because it thinks the fuel level has changed.

When there is less than 50 miles to empty, the MPG display reverts to Miles to Empty.

I think he means that it shows 50 (or more) miles to empty, then all of the sudden it reads as 'no miles left to empty', then back up again. OTOH, we can also read it as it might say 250 miles to empty, then swing down to 200 miles to empty, then swing back up to 250 miles to empty.

It will say 266 miles to empty then all of a sudden drop to 215 miles to empty then later on jump back up to 260's again while driving. Good possibility of a sending unit going bad.

I think its about time to unload this one and buy an older Expy... just sayin.

Thanks again for all of your help, its greatly appreciated.

Does she park on steep inclines a lot? It could be reading one fuel level at start up while on the incline, then switching to the true level while driving. These trucks won't immediately recognize a change in fuel level when running unless it's something like over a 1/4 tank. If it's a change less than that, it takes a few minutes for the truck to confirm what the true fuel level is. I've seen it happen when fueling with the truck running. If not, then sending unit sounds like a good place to start.

check the hose that goes from the "vapor canister purge valve" to the intake. It can simply be so rotten that it leaks and if that doesn't do it in it also rubs on the firewall and can get a hole that way. Ford calls it a "fuel vapor separator tube" part # 2L1Z-9D289-AA

If it leaks, wouldn't it throw a code?

Thanks jdecker, I'll check that. It isn't throwing a P0455 code.

broncoholic, its parked on the level and she hasn't been running any steep inclines lately. Thanks for your response.

No problem Jim.
