Hello my 98 f150 a problem it won't shift into 4wd the lights glow and i can hear it click but nothing. When in 4L the engine gears down but nothing. I took the shift motor down and turned the **** the motor turns but nothing i took pliers and manuly turned the shaft the front wheels still don't turn. Any thoughts thanks a million Jayron
That point is not the end of the operation.
If the 4L dash light comes on but no front lockup, check the 'actuator' on the front axle for pulling the axle lock in.
If this is not happening you should not have 4H either because both need the same action at the same place.
The actuator is vacuum operated by solenoids on the firewall.
If it is locking up but no drive in only 4 L then the trans is in trouble because the drive path through the trans changes for 4L to get the low gearing..
If the shift points change for upshifting it tells you the transfer case motor has run to the 4L position ok but no guarantee the internal change took place properly.
After checking this operation out you should be able to see the trouble area.
Good luck.
there are two vacuum hoses to the front axle. one has vacuum when in 2 x 4, the other has vacuum when 4 x 4.. Pull the hoses off, turn the switch and feel for the vacuum.. IF vacuum is o.k., spray the vacuum cylinder with penetrant and tap or pry on the end to get it to move in and out. That is the front end engagement.
I just got done messing with my truck with it same problem and it sounds like internally the t case isn't engaging or it front drive shaft is broken like what I had. But tilling out the t case is easy jus listen for it engaging or put it in low range and drive it and feel the lower gears. Or just see if u can turn the front drive shaft by hand once u put in 4
