Smile Transmission diagnosis and advice

Hi,my first post here and of course I need some help !
I recently bought a 1996 ford Ranger sxt extended cab with 4liter engine and having issues with the transmission ,automatic.
I will try to explain best I can the problems.
When the transmission shifts from first to second it seems to start the shift and then about 3 to 5 seconds later it finishes it.
From second to third right before it shifts the rpms rise a little and then it shifts ,often with a little jerk.
when it shifts into od it shifts very smoothly shortly after 3rd.
I just bought the truck and have put less than 50 miles on it,I dont know any thing about the truck(servicing, maintenance etc)
What do you think is the issue and what would you do to try and solve it ?
I unfortunetly am not a mechanic but have to learn to be as after buying it money is tight!
I am on a fixed income and a small one at that !
Thanks and God Bless
Craig

'96, not sure which trans that is, but it sounds like the same things the 5 speed autos do--flare between gears.

Check this out, maybe a fix in there:

My 5 speed in an Exploder responded to some aftermarket additive, ymmv.

Welcome to FTE BTW.
