Question Ranger need cat?

I am starting to work on my 93 ranger when funds are there. But my question is do i need a Cat. for PA state emissions? I have heard you do but then I hear you don't. I have also heard a few things on the fuel millage and power.... please give me some info on this because im not trying to cut it off and have to go back and fix it again... i want to do it once and be done with that part!

if you have state emmisions then yes you will need one, but I am in AZ so cant say that is gospel. Just go talk to the testing/inspector and ask for reference on exhaust requirements. I run an aftermarket replacement cat and it was pretty cheap. Had the guy do a free flow exhaust system so he built a inch and half exhaust with magna flow muffler and the cat. He made it from the Y back and I have had no issues with it, but There are no sensors in the system except at the Y pipe. Milage issues can be plugs, wires, air cleaner any number of things so you would have to be more specific in your question/description. Also need engine info to help. A plugged cat will also cause issues with performance and milage. Take it in and have it checked.

Not sure how the rules are in different counties, try looking here:

PennDOT Driver and Vehicle Services - Vehicle Emissions Inspections

In allegheny county, you need one.

I don't feel that a properly functioning cat converter affects performance.

About a year ago i removed the cat's on my 97 3.0 Ranger, i did get a check engine light but that was fixed by my sct tuner.
I replaced said exhaust and cat's with a 3" free flow muffler, and the exhaust exits right in front of the right rear tire.
No change in fuel economy.
When it comes to performance it's a different story. From idle to about 4000 rpm there was no real change but after 4000 up to 5500 there was a big difference, with the cat's i could feel a drop in power at those rpm's, it would not accelerate as good as it did under 4000. (sidenote: cat's was replaced by previous owner and was new.)
After i replaced the exhaust it would pull stronger than ever past 4000 and would not stop until the red line was hit (5500)
It also makes a lovely sound and in my country, passes emissions with flying colors.
Currently working on supercharging the 3.0 but that's slightly off topic for this thread
