Doing some work on an '04 4wd with around 90K miles. After rotating tires went to put the front right on and noticed movement from side to side. No up and down movement at all and it is showing in both the CV and the tie rod back towards the rack and pinon assembly. The other side is nice and tight and got a new hub assembly about 8 months ago. My guess is this is a rack problem but I've never dealt with one before, the movement is probably a good inch back and forth at the rotors and as I said no up and down or in and out at the top or bottom. This is all side to side front to back movement. Checking rockauto I am surprised how cheap the whole assembly is, any ideas if ATSCO or Cardone is better? I'll price Napa as well. Good chance the truck may go back together for a little while unless there is a safety concern. Truck is off road a lot but does see 20-30 mile trips on highway at times.
I agree, that much play isn't likely safe on the highway, so I agree it should be put right asap. I'm still on my OEM tie rods & p/s rack, so I don't have any inputs on parts quality or fit, beyond OEM, but bet other forum members with replacement experience would have some worthy inputs if they would just take the time to chime in.
If I understand your description right, it sounds to me like worn tie-rod ends. And if you need to replace any of the ends (there are four, two inner & two outer), then you should replace all of them. If any one is worn, then the others can't be far behind, and a front end alignment will need to be done after any front end work.
