been a while since i posted. i got hit in a wreck. she took on cab damage. fortunately, that section of the cab tat got hit was pushed in but it was about 3 to 4 inches away from the truck frame. motor and tranny are fine. alignment got knocked. busted driver side front rim. tire got separated and a little dug-in on the tire wall. just a line.
my question is "can i replace that section with a barbed brass fitting?" what is the ID size? are all ID sizes for the 3 hoses in that area the same? anyone else attempted a brass fitting? maybe a part number and where exactly to pick one up from?
so far i've only known of 1 guy who's done that brass fitting. his is home-made.
If I can use a brass fitting to replace a plastic coolant fitting I do. There's a couple fittings on some of the VW/Audi vehicles I work on that get very brittle over time and break easily. I always recommend to the customer to just get a brass T-fitting from Ace Hardware to replace it as the plastic one will eventually do the same thing. I would doubt you can find a brass fitting shaped like that to replace it. I would assume it's probably 1/2" or so but I'd think you'd only be able to find a T-shaped fitting.
tats cool. t-shaped it is then. where can i find them? ace hardware? i'll try that tomorrow. i'm itching to get her started. she hasnt been started in 2 days. lol
also, thanks for the quick reply cody. for that particular section i'm talking about, are the hoses all the same in internal diameter?
It's not 1/2", it's 3/4" and it goes to your heater return hose. I don't have any experience taking the rest of that loose, but they look like (from the photo) threaded fittings on the other two. If that's the case, you will need to probably remove it and take it with you to any hardware store. Or, just order the OEM part. Unless someone comes along who knows for sure and can tell you that they aren't threaded.

Yea, I had to get mine at Ace. I tried Lowe's and Menard's with no luck. Ace seems to have a better selection as far as pipe fittings and hoses goes. As far as I can tell they should all 3 be the same diameter. I've not seen a y-fitting shaped like that before but it's possible you could get a T-fitting to work in there as well. It doesn't necessarily have to be barbed either, I've been able to get PEX-end ones to seal up too without a problem as long as they are the proper diameter. I'd just take that fitting out and take it with you to the store so you can get a better match. You're gonna lose some coolant anyways during the swap.
The degas bottle isn't cracked on the bottom too, is it?
nope. degas bottle is dry underneath. i guess i can pry out the plastic sleeve around the 2 hoses or i can just cut them off.
i was reading about the pex-end ones. if it's 3/4" on all 3 hoses, then it should be straightforward and easier to find.
Was just curious, my degas bottle was cracked at the bottom fitting and I ended up replacing it. Also, it was a nice brown color too and I wanted a nice clear white one. lol If they are all the same size it will make it way easier to find a replacement. Most brass fittings are all the same size at the junction.
I believe this is the hose you need. It looks like the other 2 hoses are permanently connected and you'll probably have to rig it to work. I believe the OEM Part # is 5C3Z8075CB It's $36.79 at RockAuto.com
I did make up that fitting in threaded brass to match the angles. It cost me about 13 bucks at home depot. Lasted about a week and then the joints started to weep. I reassembled again with teflon tape, same result. I tried again with pipe dope, leaked again. Finally bought the hose assembly from Ford and never looked back.
