Think your accel pedal position sensors bad? Think again.

So about 5 months ago I was getting major buck and dead spots on my throttle pedal and engine check lights. All sorts of fun. So assuming that my a.p.p. sensor or as most ppl cal them "TPS" was bad , I head to napa buy a new one. Well it lasted about a month. Then the same thing occured. It took me 3 tries with three different sensors. Junker dorman brand. So I took them in on warranty about 3 times and finally said I'd had enough. Luckily I kept my stock ford motorcraft sensor. So what I did was eliminated the IVS from the system. I removed it off the pedal assembly and mounted it right under the dash. So it is sort of an anti theft device also in a way. Because you can start the truck. But there's no throttle response until you find the switch and click it once. I've had it this way about 2 months. And its working great ! My truck is my daily driver. No problems at all. No buck. No check engine lights. Nothing. I'm planning on posting pics of the mod soon. But if nobody cares ill just leave the words to describe it no pics. I also forgot to mention that the throttle is smoother now then when I bought the bugger.

I always bend the IVS tab in closer to the IVS so that the magnet hits the tab quicker/easier. I just bend it close enough so the switch hits as soon as I move the pedal just a tiny bit.

Glad you got it working. Never heard of anyone doing this before. Well done.

That's just a mechanical switch, not a magnet. Works like a brake light switch, or the light in the fridge. Tab that hits the plunger is right on the pedal arm; adjustment takes but a minute. But the "limp mode" idea is intriguing....

sounds like the tps wasn't the problem to begin with, rather that the ivs was going in and out for some reason while driving. I imagine that would cause some serious bucking!

Just keep in mind that you have also defeated what is considered to be a safety feature. If your TPS were to go bad now, the truck would run away. It's probably not a huge deal for someone who knows the truck, but that switch is intended as a fail safe to override the TPS signal when you aren't pressing the pedal.

If it were me, I think I would just replace the IVS. They're not more than $20. If you wanted the "anti-theft" feature of it you could still do that by interrupting the signal to the IVS with a single pole switch and hiding it under the dash somewhere.

^ Good point, Nate.

take away the IVS and you might as well call it a Toyota! ok, maybe that's a little extreme (any highly offensive) :-)

They do sell the IVS separately if you can find them. May have to go to Ford dealer.

Yeah, they do. The IVS is a Cutler Hammer Part # SS22BW32-330Y. It used to be an in-stock part at this site: SS22BW32-330Y Cutler Hammer/Eaton | Buy SS22BW32 330Y | Onlinecomponents.com. I'm not sure if they can still get them (they show that they have 0 in stock) or if you can locate one somewhere else.

sorry to bring last week thread up, seems silly to start a new one.

would this fix, bucking at slow speeds, low throttle input? like crawling around a drive thru? my wife almost spilled her ice cream last night cause the truck lurched forward with very little throttle pressure. its only the second time its happened. thanks
