2003 Expedition EB no Advanced track, Mnf. Date 1/03. I swapped out the hissing booster last night. Thanks to all posters on resolving this issue. When I disconnected the push rod during removal, I pulled the pedal slightly rearward (1/4 to half in.) for clearance, there was a ratcheting sound like a heavy duty zip tie. I did not think much of it at the time and did the swap. Started the vehicle no hissing on the test drive, brakes worked good, nice firm pedal. But I noticed a clicking sound, like a relay, just below the steering wheel. This occurs on the initial touch and release of the brake pedal. It has never made this sound before. Now the cruise control does not work (wife's car she no likey) which was functioning properly before the repair. So did I brake or misalign something when I heard the zip sound pulling the pedal rearward? It only made the sound the one time. What do you all think?
The clicking under the steering wheel is the safety feature that prevents you from shifting out of park without your foot on the brake. You probably just didn't know it was doing this before but it is completely normal.
With the cruise control, did you hook up the wire under the hood that connects to the master cylinder. That wire goes to the cruise control and shuts it off when the switch in the master cylinder senses you applied the brakes. If that wire isn't hooked up the cruise control won't work.
Yes, I made sure there was a solid (snap) connection with the connector on the master cylinder. I double checked everything. No leaks, trouble codes, hissing,... breaks work fine. Cruise worked perfectly prior to replacement. I've read a lot of the posts regarding the clicking sound that is "normal". I am **** when it comes to noises and rattles. The sound I am hearing now was not present before I replaced the booster. When cycling the gear selector, it definitely sounds like a relay cycling on press and release of the pedal. With the pedal depressed, it clicks (cycles) with every gear position change from P to 1, then clicks again on release. These sounds are not normal for this rig, they are new. Any more thoughts?
I have nothing further for you on the clicking then. Sorry.
On the cruise control, get a test light and confirm the wire going to the master cylinder has 12V on it. If it does not then the fuse/fuseable link in that wire may have blown.
Problem solved! Turns out the ratcheting sound I heard when I moved the pedal was the plunger on the CC deactivation switch. The switch is designed to self adjust upon installation with the brake pedal depressed. When the pedal is released the plunger ratchets into place so it is always in contact with BP when there is no pressure on it. Its kind of hard to reach, I used a bent needle nose pliers to push the plunger forward while depressing the BP. Released the pedal, heard a couple of clicks, went for a test drive and voila cruise control is back. Wife happy. Thank for the replies. As for the clicking, I think you were right, I just never noticed it before. I'll just have to get used to now that I have know it's there.
