Floor Rust line ???

Floor Rust line ???
I was looking at another 65 cc to buy and i noticed rust along the weld line where the top of the carpet ends and the firewall pad begins. The rust runs all the way from the left to right. I'm assuming this is from a leak,,, BUT from where. Neither my 65 or 66 has rust at this location. Is this maybe coming from the cowling venting or maybe from the wiper arm ***. and running down. Can't really see where it might be coming from unless I rip out the firewall pad and of course I can't since the truck in NOT mine/yet.
Has anyone else had this area rusted and have you figured out where it was coming from... AND, what the fix is....

Very likely a leak in one of two places.
Likely culprit is the cowl or wipers as you thought. Another less likely location is the seam on the front of the cab where the upper and lower part of the cab come together.

at that seem, it looks like the upper firewall metal overlaps on the out side rather than overlapping on the inside which would alllow water to run in. I'm assuming that welded line is spot welded and there needs to be a seem sealer applied along that seem. As I look up high on one of my other trucks, I see no where water can get in form up high except the wiper shafts. BUT since my 2 trucks DO NOT leak up under there, its hard to figure out where its coming from and the guy told me he didn't want me pullling anything apart - don't blame him.
Guess I'll just need to grab a couple beer this week end and just crawl in and lay down on the cab floor with a flaselight check the best I can...I figured its at least a two beer job................ ;o)

Both of my trucks have rust along this seem. It is just surface rust. The 63 was worse than the 65. I cant remember on the 63 if I pulled any sealer out of there or not. The 63 was an Oregon truck so may just be rusting from the inside out due to salt air and condensation. If there was a leak in any of the previous areas discussed I will be addressing those as the truck goes back together. Come to think of it I did find pin hole rust along the drip rails on both passanger and driver sides. Moisture may have been finding its way down there from this area.

Where the cab mounts, floor pans and cab pieces come together there ia a seam at the described location which would allow water to pass and cause rust if not sealed properly. Both of our 66's had rust at the seam. If you look at the firewall from the engine compartment you will see where all these components come together in the form of a small trough; this area was filled with some sort of seam sealer from the factory, but on many trucks it is cracked and porous just as the stuff in the drip rails is prone. On the inside this seam was originally sprayed with some sort of undercoating goop which was cracked and porous on both our trucks. The metal parts that come together at this seam are creased/ bent so the egde points forward into the engine bay. The rust was mostly surface with just a few pinhole through points on both our rides. The water that gets through at this location is more likely to rust out where it settles --- aka the low points of the floor pans and where they meet the bottom of the kick panels.

No, I was talking about where the TOP of the carpet meets the BOTTOM of the firewall pad. Up higher, closer the the 'level' of the bottom of the dash.
BUT WOW, I've never seen one rusted out in the location in your picture, AND that bad. Guess I don't get out much. I've been pretty busy and just maybe my memory is going south. I could be so lucky. There are thinks we'd all like to forget, I'm sure. When I get back in town, I'll take another look.

I have one of our 66s apart and attached are three photos (i hope). There are two horizontal seams that run across the cab front; one is where the cowl meets the firewall (upper seam in photos; cannot get a good look at outside since cowl area cannot be accessed). The lower seam in the photos is where the carpet and firewall pad met when I tore the cab apart and is the inside view of the seam 66with352 posted in a photo -- the horizontal ledge in 66with352's photo is supposed to be filled with a seam sealer as it is essentially a trough that will collect water and dirt. On the inside both seams were coated with some sort of undercoating like goop that was cracked. I resealed the inside of both seams and the outside of the lower seam with Por-15 Por-Patch; have to cut the cowl open to get to the outside of the upper seam.

I have floor rust on the drivers side floor and have a new panel to install. I also have ordered anew inner rocker panel to fix the water seal line.
