Hi guys. I have a 1966 F100 with the 352 in it. I got it from my grandpa awhile back, and the engine has been rebuilt but honestly I'm not sure how long ago. I drove it from North Caroina to Louisiana with no problems whatsoever, and now I'm in Houston. Its in great conditon.
However, lately I've noticed a kind of pulley noise, like a bad idler pulley. I tried spraying WD-40 on each to narrow it down but it only goes away when I spray the A/C belt on the crank pully. The A/C is an aftermarket deal but is brand new. It gets louder obviously as the RPM's go up. At idle if I turn the A/C on it goes away.
Any suggestions?
Welcome to the site. First; how old is the A/C belt, if that is the only belt making noise, it may need to be replaced. Also, check to alignment of the pulleys.
The AC is less than a year old and belt looks great. The weird thing is it doesn't stop when I spray the AC belt at the compressor. It only stops when I get it down towards the crank pulley. I'll try to be more precise in my spraying to get a better idea of where its going.
One thing I thought of was that the truck didn't originally have AC. So would it have had a spot for an AC belt? Maybe the pulley has been changed?
I am guessing the ac clutch. Tighten the belt. When you turn on the ac it energizes the clutch and the noise goes away which suggests the load puts enough stress on the belt to stop it from slipping (just the opposite what one would normally guess).
You need a mechanic's stethiscope. Cheap at the auto parts or on line. Or you can use any tube but either way, be carefull as both can slap the blood out of you it you touch a moving part
