Finally installed my new 4" turbo back system. Went cheap and bought the aluminized steel with muffler ( kit 18979) I work at a Internaional dealership as body shop manager so I went ahead and coated the pipes with high temp black paint. Thinking it would help keep the pipes from rusting and hopefully make them last. Fit was great everything lined up. But that's where the problem starts. Kit came with extra pipe depending on setup. Painted pipes, muffler, and hangers. Go to install and with pipes they said to use was way to short. Ended up having to use the longest pipe that I hadn't painted. Strike one. Next honestly can't believe this but noticed it is quiter than my factory setup. When the wife makes a comment I new it wasn't just me. Strike two. As far as egt's go there is no difference in driving or towing. Strike three. All I can say is the new exhaust spools faster than stock and is ONLY louder at WOT. For the most part pretty disappointed.
I had the Magnaflow on my old truck and you are right it is quiet, but that is what I wanted and what I had heard about the Magnaflow system. It does get louder over time. I noticed maybe a 75* drop in EGT's. I was pretty pleased with the setup, but I managed to get it for $300 to my door for the stainless version.
Normal drive temps for my truck seem to be around the same temp. Maybe 25-35* cooler but pulling a 26' gooseneck with 11k Track Loader & 3.5k worth attachments still runs the same as stock. I will say it cools off faster after hard pulls. Which is a positive in my opinion. I'm on the fence on the noise, one hand I don't want a straigth piped truck. The other I'd like to have a little more whistle during normal driving that I seem to have loss. Will have to see if it get's a little better with time.
Magnaflow is for us old fogeys who want LESS noise in the cab...
It performs that task exceptionally well.
Faster turbo spool and lower egt's on the gauge is just a bonus!
X2 on what Christof13T said. I love my Magnaflow system and the tone it produces. dB levels about the same as stock for me but I am a little deaf so I may not be the best judge of that.
I installed the SS off-road one about 2 weeks ago, the one that dumps under the truck and I love the sound. But after being stock straight piped for over a year, anything to bring the cab noise down I would have loved. Mines got a pretty good tone when your behind the truck, and quiet in the cab except for the motor sound.
I like a low/subtle rumble with a loud freaking whistle and I got that with the Flow Pro. Not satisfied, I got the 38R turbo... and now Stinky's just an obnoxious SOB. I love it.
i'd have to say, the count is 0 and 1, with 2 shrug off pitches, yet to be thrown.. Not representing MagnaFlow, nor try'n to be a di@#, from what members here claim, they (Mag) say it reduces noise. First shrug is not laying out "fitment" prior to installing. 2nd shrug is, members have a slight decrease in egt's. Maybe pyro install at fault, intake/boost/exhaust leak somewhere...
If its anything like my kit, it has a 3.5" downpipe instead of a 4". Its supposed to help spoolup time but doesn't drop as much EGTs as the full 4". I don't know how anybody fits a 5" DP in, there is literally no room! I went for the stainless steel version as I drive salt covered roads in the winter. You guessed it, its rusting! That tells me they use cheaper SS (304 vs 316). Overall, I'm pleased with the throaty tone and reduction in temps.
If you really want to lower your egt's you should get the 1.0 non-wastegate turbo housing and the larger exhaust housing adapter. While your doing this fix your up-pipes if you haven't done it already. I pull a trailer a lot of miles and I use to see 1250-1300 regularly on long hills. In fact I would have to back out of it. Now I seldom bump much over 1100 on long pulls. I have ran a 4 inch on a previous truck but right now I'm running stock exhaust with gutted muffler. I think bigger exhaust pipe is way overrated for lowering egt's (muffler and cat now that's another story). The restriction is at the turbo and the back of the turbo not the exhaust pipe. With that being said I like the sound of a 4 inch and when I get the bigger sticks I may upgrade my exhaust. Bottom line if your looking for good improvements on egt's by buying a 4 inch you are going to be disappointed.
I am in the market for exhaust so thanx for the report.
Not being any louder won't bother me but I would like to see the egt drop.
Question is that 11k +3.5k + another 7 or so for the trailer?
I don't have anything quite that heavy and my DL don't cover it.
Curious if others are seeing better egt reduction with 10 or 12k trailers?
I pull a 17K trailer and I don't have any problems with EGTs with my full 4" Magnaflow exhaust. It actually doesn't seem like the trailer really effects the temps from what I see. It is more how hard I push it whether empty or towing. There is one hill by where we go camping a lot that I have to start out from a stop at the bottom. It is pretty steep and I hit just over 1200 on that hill but otherwise I never see over 1100. Normal driving down the highway is down in the 600 to 700 range just like when I am empty.
