Hey guys so if you had read my last post it was about a noise heard when you spun the turbo like it was scraping. I checked everything and feel that it was the bearings making the noise since it wasn't constant. After getting the turbo back in and making sure everything was good I fired her up and my first impression was that it sounded exactly identical to stock. Now for the drive. Before the wheel swap I was running my dp on 80hp econ and was able to hit 20lbs and up no problem driving 70mph and romping on the throttle. Now when doing the same test I barely make 17lbs. I checked all my connections, the babys butt dowel pin, everything I could think of and everything is exactly how it was last time. Now for the in cab noise. It sounds like a 747 turbine spooling up and its not pleasant. I miss my old wheel already. At slower speeds and lower boost it sounds like a bad bearing noise but it never sounded like that with stock. I don't feel that it spools any faster and the truck actually had more pep with the stock wheel. The billet wheel did cure the surge but my driving style I never really had that issue unless I was fooling around. I left Clay a voicemail and want to see what his thinking may be about this. On his website he stated that they usually see 5 to 7lbs of boost increase on stock injectors. Now I know every truck is different so I wasn't expecting anything like that but maybe 2lb increase. I may be switching back to my old wheel which will suck since I need the take the turbo out again to do so. And when installing the new wheel I went step by step following clays install page and DID NOT use an impact on the wheels. I should have just went with my first decision and got the 38R....
Any help or similar experiences are greatly appreciated,
-AJ
Are you talking about the 6/6 wheel or his first 5/5 version? I have the new 6/6 wheel and have no problems. The sound is about the same as my stock e99 wheel and except for my max boost, I am not really seeing much of a difference so far. Normal driving boost levels look real close to what they were. I haven't towed with it yet so I am not sure what the difference will be once it is under a real load.
Are you still running the 6637? I have the AIS and mine sounds pretty much exactly the same as my stock wheel. I max out at 23psi which is about 2psi more than I saw with my stock wheel. Let us know what Clay says but in a stock truck, I am not seeing much of a difference overall with mine. I don't see or feel any difference in spool up or performance. Cruising down the freeway if anything I would have to say that the boost is a little lower by 1 or 2 psi than it was before. Like I said, the only thing I see is a little higher max boost. Would I buy it again if I already had a anti surge wheel? I am not so sure.
To be fare, I installed this wheel on my rebuilt turbo and have not run the other wheel on this same turbo. Maybe this turbo has slightly different characteristics than my old turbo did and the stock wheel might put out even less. Both are stock e99 turbos and I did use my same compressor housing so who knows.
Yes i am still running the 6637. I have always heard turbo noise but nothing like thus. Like i said before my max now is nearly 17psi and i have also noticed that when cruising it is a 1 or 2 less. I will post later on after i hear from clay and let you guys know what's going on.
I think something is wrong with your turbo. You have an a lot of things that are pointing to an issue for me, and I realize you aren't running tunes so some of the performance enhancements that the wheel is supposed to net you won't be realized unless you are, but to be making sounds like that and no benefit in performance tells me something is off.
There is something wrong somewhere...
There is no reason for a max boost loss switching to that wheel.
Have you actually put a boost leak detector cap on it and checked for leaks?
Did you overtighten your boot clamps at the plenums and crush or do you have billet/inserts?
Leaks at the plenum/head?
Hmm that seems like a big difference for an E99. How are your injectors?
Not to muddy the waters for the OP but what is a big difference for my e99? A 2 psi gain at max is a big difference? Don't know so I am just asking. Injectors seem to be fine and I have no problems with the truck. I know 23 psi is higher than what I have seen other people post for their e99 truck but the real comparison has to stay within my trucks numbers. Just like AJ is comparing his numbers to before and after the install of the wheel.
"We usually see a 5-7 PSI gain in boost, as well as less smoke, better drivability and quicker response." Works fine but I don't really see this on my truck. Maybe this is only with tunes. Also maybe another sign AJ has a problem with his.
"we are seeing an average of 12.8hp and 38.7tq gain on stock injectors with just a swap of the wheel." Again, I haven't dynoed it but I don't feel any seat of the pants difference for sure.
I am not trying to bash the wheel or anything like that, I am just giving my results so AJ could have a comparison for what he is seeing. I was nervous about buying this wheel since it was just coming out and there were no real world results for it but I had my turbo out and needed to get it back in. I like Riffraff so I went that direction over the WW2 unit.
I went through a very similar experience recently when I installed a ported shroud compressor housing. My numbers and symptoms were even the same - I was only seeing 16 - 17 psi max and it was very loud.
