I finally got around to attempting to fix the air gap in my compressor on my 02 f-350 so far so good. The question I have is I have a 05 f-350 with 203000 miles on it and am having the same issues with no a/c at idle and inter mitten a/c at driving speeds. I tried to fix it the same way as the 02 but when you turn on the key and put the ac on max the compressor will not lock up to allow me to remove the 8mm bolt to pull off the compressor clutch I guess some change was made that will not engage the clutch with it not running? It engages right away when cranked. Any ideas?
There's a "spanner" wrench designed specifically to hold the clutch plate. Maybe they "loan" (buy and then return) at your local parts house. That will get the bolt removed for you, but I wonder if there isn't something else going on that's preventing current flow to the coil, like a too-low-refrigerant-charge opening the low-side switch (it's a "safety" thing).

I seem to be having this same issue on my 2006 6.0. A/c is charged with no leaks and blows ice cold when working, which is most of the time. The compressor will randomly cycle off when driving, sometimes cycling back on within 30 seconds, but often i have to turn the A/C off for a bit and then turn it back on to re-engage the clutch. Is this a common issue on the 04-07's as well? And is there a write-up on this so I can knock it out this weekend? Thanks for any help!
Well, your asking those questions on a 99-03 7.3 Powerstroke sub forum not to mention the thread being more than 10 years old so... That said if I were diagnosing that problem on a 7.3 I would start with wiggling the connectors for the high and low switches as we;; as the compressor clutch to see if I could replicate the problem. If not the I'd hook the gauges up and check the charge on the system. You can also check the air gap of the clutch.

Same deal as the 7.3L....just a bit harder to get to. Did another last week for a gal with a 6.0L. Same symptoms as yours.
