Write up for water pump replacement

After I came back from a church youth camping trip, I noticed some liquid on my driveway. At first I thought that it's just condensate from the AC. After I taste it it turned out to be antifreeze. It looks like its from the water pump. I'll do a thorough examination after church today (weather is beautiful today) and see what is exactly going on. Since I do not know the history of the old pump and leaving on a 3000 miles summer trip, I probably should open up that area and make it 100%. Does anyone have a write up for this job? I'm also going to rip that cheap thermostat housing thing and replace it with the nicer one from Clay. Thanks. Erwin

Maybe a bypass coolant filter while I'm in there and also a 6.0 L cooler. Not sure if I have time to do all these before the trip, but will definitely try.

The WP is easy on these . Just get the bolts back in the proper place . The only hard bit can be getting the fan off , but with the proper tools , easy enough .

Here is one of a few Youtube videos on waterpump replacement.
Easier to show you than explain in words.

It is actually pretty easy if you have a few tools. You will need to get the Fan off of the Fan Clutch. That can be a chore, but I have an easy way that I do it. You can usually rent a Fan Wrench at the auto parts stores. IF you have a 1-7/8" wrench it works too. I most often use a 1-7/8" crows foot and a air hammer. Place the crow's foot or wrench on the fan nut. Use the air hammer with a flat die to strike the tool pretty close to the nut. The impact action will easily loosen the Fan Nut in just a few seconds. You won't have to hold the pulley while doing this. I have used this method every time with no issues.

Also leave the belt installed until you get the fan pulley bolts loose. It will help you loosen them quickly.

Make sure you are using good quality tools and the right sizes, the bolt heads can deform quickly and then the job will take on a whole new challenge. If you can, I would have replacement bolts on hand for the job, along with RTV.

These should help you to have printed copies.

While you are in there, replace the standard upper hose with the around the belt hose. If you have fan belt issues, you won't have to drain the coolant to change the belt.

The coolant filter is an easy to complete job. The hardest part for me was making the mount for the filter. I did mine DIY with two valves (in and out of the filter). Cost about the same as purchasing a kit.

The alternate is to put the IH water pump on. which has a filter mount built into it. I have a .pdf of the IH instructions (made by someone else) if you want to PM me so I can send it to you.

Napa was where I purchased the one I bought. Most any parts store should have them or be able to get them for you.

Ask for the upgrade upper coolant hose. It goes around the outside of the belt so if you have a problem with the belt, you don't have to drain coolant to change the belt.

The "special" upper radiator hose is the stock replacement for dual alternator applications. Most experienced parts salespersons will know what you are asking for when you request one. More Information for GATES 22433

Here is a how to video I did when I did mine for the 2nd time. Links to everything you need, including the wrap around hose, is linked in the description. My video doesnt go over the coolant flush procedure so look over a how-to on that as well. I also recommend a coolant filter. Guess what, I do have a video for that. [LINK]

Also, check this out...
DieselSite has a new "FORD" waterpump for $115. The Ford pumps are considered best and in the item description "All Dieselsite waterpumps come with a lifetime warranty to the original purchaser."

Cant beat that. Best pump. Best price. Best warranty.

Now I came across another dilemma: What coolant do I use after doing a Gooch flush? My truck built time is 12/22/1998 and According to this: The early99 does not have the AIH like the late99-03.
The early99 has no indicator light showing that "cruise" is on. Late99-03 has a cruise light that will come on when you set the cruise control.
" I have a late 99 truck. However, according to Gooch, I cannot use HD ELC coolant since my engine is obviously built before 02/02/1999. Is this still true?
