I recently looked at a 2005 ford excursion eddie bauer with the 6.0 diesel with 40k miles. they want to 30k for it at a dealer, is that a good price, what kind of issues should I look for in a 6.0?
Several weak areas:
1. High pressure oil system leaks (STC fitting, dummy plugs, standpipes).
2. The EGR cooler in the 05-07 model years are weak. Even if it has been replaced, I would budget for an aftermarket one (bulletproofdiesel)
3. Oil coolers are prone to plugging on the coolant side (root cause, sand, poor coolant maintenance)
4. Fuel Injection Control Modules are prone to failure. Repair/Upgrade in the aftermarket is best solution for $350 (FICMRepair.com)
5. Look for signs of coolant blowing out of the degas bottle - it leaves a white/chalky residue.
6. Sometimes the fuel pressure regulator spring gets weak. I would have them do a fuel pressure check (they can do it at simulated WOT).
If they drop the price into a reasonable range, I would get a scangaugeII, program it with the proper x-gauges, and do a test drive. A search here can help you learn about the scangauge. Another option would be a couple of phone apps: available for i-phones or androids.
Primarily you would be looking for the maximum temperature differential between the oil and coolant (no more than 10 degrees IMO - fords spec is 15 degrees at a careful WOT during maximum boost).
Also - look carefully for oil leaks.
Lastly, I would consider asking them to do an injector contribution test
I agree with Mark, a little stiff on the price. I know of a nice Excursion loaded with a 7.3L diesel for sale for a whole lot less..... Clean Southern ride.
Check to see what year the engine was produced. There is a sticker on the passenger side valve cover with that information. Typically Excursions would get the previous year motors left over from Super Duty production.
Thanks for all the info, Dealer didnt want to budge on the price so I decided not to purchase it. Excursion was in excellent shape no leaks it turned out to be the owner of the dealer's excursion so the history on it was really good.
I have been looking for a 7.3 diesel but so far i have had no luck here in nevada dealers want a good amount of money here for a 7.3.
