You guys think it is possible to get a 460 cubic inch v8 into a 78 f100 with out a whole lot of modifications? The truck has a 300 inline six in it riht now, but I might be able to get my hands on a 460 to try and drop in there. What sort of modifications might be needed? Would stiffer springs be in order, as well as stronger drive train parts? What kind of new transmission would be best? Anything I can find at a junkyard? I am on a limited budget because I am in college and don't have a whole lot of extra money. Anyway, thanks for any advice.
I'm in the slow, very slowy, process of doing the same thing. How far along are you or are you just considering this? PM me and we can discuss it. Laptop Geek is another member who has completed this project. He's a really helpfull guy.
Yeah, no kidding.... And you might want to make sure the front brakes are really good, your front brakes do 90% of the stoping, and with the added weight.... I am not sure how much more it will weight, but just a thought.... Hey I hope I am not butting in, but I was wondering how much a job like this would cost? Including all of the modifications?
It's not too bad, I did mine, by myself, in about a week. I went from a 351w to a 77 460. If you don't use truck manifolds or headers, you will have to notch the frame for the passenger side manifold. All of the motor mount, frame mount holes are already in the frame. If you are getting the motor out of a car, the tranny is longer and will not accept the truck mount. I had to shorten my driveshaft 2 3/4". You must have 460 truck frame mounts and motor mounts. Other than that, it's just bolt and go.

I've been considering this swap myself. I have all the parts but I don't want to go overboard. I have a '92 5.0 out of a Mustang GT in it (1977 F-100) right now but it does need a bit more power. I picking up a new rear-end today in hopes of helping the pep.

I guess cost depends on how deep you want to go with the project. I had my 460 blueprinted / balanced / bored and added a lot of hot rod stuff to the motor. I would say roughly a few thousand ( and this includes the rebuild ).
Cost also varies with what part of the country you're in. Labor rates down here in the southeast are a lot less than some areas in the the northeast.
Before I started the project I did a LOT of shopping at summit / jegs / and L&L....
