rear differential for a 79 lincoln 460 into a 76 f100
I'm in the process of removing the bed from my truck. I plan to rebuild the truck starting from the rear. My reason? Too crzy to post all the info. Anyways, I was looking under the bed and the thought arose if I would need to change the rear end to make it compatible with the 460. I've been working on this truck for over a year and I'm still a novice. Can anyone tell me if a 460 will work with the current rear end of a 76 f100 that had an in line 6? How does one identify what type of rear end is currently installed? Thanks for the help.

Your truck should have the good old 9" rear which will work just fine behind a 460. There should be a tag under a bolt on the differential carrier. If you find all of the numbers on that we can identify the ratio and differential type.

M il1ion,
I apologize for my ingnorance, however I am a novice and therefore know next to nothing. I only work on my truck as my jobs allow me, because of this I have research again and again to refresh my knowledge base. Thanks for the reply though, you are the greatest databank of knowledge on this website and since the day I joined you have helped more than anyone.

did any of the f-100's come with 9" rears or did most? I've got an 8.8 and i was wondering if that is common or odd. I would love to have a 9" at some point but that won't come until i beef up the motor. thanks

I actually have only found a 31 spline in a 2wd once. That truck was a 77 F150 equipped with a 351m or 400 ( I forget which ) and an np435 trans. It also had a 3.0:1 differential.

From what I've seen so far the later model F100's have the 28 spline count. Go to a 150 and you get 31. A F100 with a L6 also usually has a C4 while a F150 with the same motor has a C6....that's of the 78/79 flavor.

In my fomoco fleet I have a 71 Lincoln Mark 3 ( last year of the 10 to 1 compression and DOVE-C heads) The rear end has the 9 3/8" ring gear and sure trac brakes, early day abs system. The 9 3/8" pumpkin will fit with a little grinding in the 9" case. The ratios in those cars are 2.7ish to 1 with optional 3.00 to 1, some had posi. You will like the torque with this combo. I can get 1st and second gear rubber in my Mark 3 and top end around 135mph.

All F150's (1975) had 31 spline axles, also all F100's from 1975 and up had 31 spline axles. Prior to 1975 F100s had 28 spline axles, that does not make them weaker though. Also, most windsor bellhousing motors had C4s if they were autos. The C4 is just as tough as the C6.

Not sure if it was the buck tag or not, but the only tag I saw read BZC. There were some other stamps D 2SWC and 9 4 75. the latter of which seems like a date. Can anyone tell me what this is and how it will hold up to a 460?
