As long as it's a quality, proportional brake controller, it will be good.

I use an original Prodigy by Tekonsha. They can be had used for around $50 right now. The newer version of the Prodigy is a P2 which can be had brand new for about $100.

I second the Prodigy. I also have the original and have never had a problem. Be sure to get the wiring harness to make installation easier.

Scott, do the 2000 Excursions come pre-wired for the trailer brake harness?
I haven't looked for the plug yet, but I hope to transfer my brake controller from my 2005 to my 2000 before I sell the 05.

Thanks!

I have had several brake controllers over the years. I have never used a hydraulic system (brake smart) I think was brand, but I have used several electrical systems. Hands down my favorite is the prodigy p3. Very easy to hook up. Works with any axle combo, does an amazing job and cheap. I shopped around for awhile and got it for 130 shipped. I like the controls, the way it brakes, and the fact that if there is a wiring problem in the trailer brakes it lets you know immediately. Good luck
