Looking to purchase a 03 Ford F-250 CrewCab with a 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel. We pull a 23ft boat on a double axle trailer in flat territory with few hills Was wandering what kind of fuel milage I should expect with a gear ratio of 4.23. Concerned about fuel milage empty as we only pull on weekends. What would the parts cost for changing the gear ratio. Any help appreciated.
How much does your boat weight? Keep in mind that the F250 with a crew cab and the diesel adds quite a bit of weight to the truck. You might want an F350. If you're talking about changing the gear ratio, consider getting a dually with the 4.10 from the factory. That should be plenty of power for your boat.
3.73 is a good ratio for 23 foot of anything you want to pull with a powerstroke. Put a Superchip or Diablo in it and have fun. You dont want or need 4.10 ratio for weekend towing. Only need 4.10s if your pulling 5th wheel setups or towing commercially. I tried to get 3.55s when I ordered my truck, factory wouldnt do it. The 3.73 will get 3 to 5 miles a gallon better mileage from all the people I deal with.
An F-250 SD CC PSD w/ 3.73 gears [and, oh yeah, a SuperChip programmer!] should be just fine to pull a 23-ft boat. Keep tires to 33" or less....
I pull a twin engine 26-footer with 240 gallons of fuel [weighing in at about 9000-lbs] with my 97 F-250 PDS w/ 4.10 gears and 35-inch tires...just fine.
Do I wish I had a dually F350 CC 4x4 PDS to pull a 31-footer on a tri-axle? Well, y-e-a-h, what fella doesn't...?
