Body twist and the tailgate

GM is quite proud of that video of the two trucks on the crawler and the SD getting all twisted up and crunching the tailgate.

Anyone here see issues?

4 times that I can remember so far this year I had my truck off level enough that I could not open the tailgate. All with the 5th wheel attached.
Twice while camping and twice while in my driveway.
Camping had the truck on some fairly uneven ground. In my driveway where I park my trailer the trailer itself is on all concrete but one side of the truck is on concrete and one side is about 4" lower on packed soil.

Each time I could not get the tailgate open, even unloading the weight.
Each time required lifting the trailer high enough for the pin box to clear the tailgate and then drive out. Fortunately I have hydraulic landing gear so it doesn't take long and I have the ram travel available to lift this high.

Still a bit of a pain.

Have not noticed the tail gate issue, as I'm normally on level ground, but the truck overall is quite twistable on uneven roads. Feels as though the frame is constantly being twisted... Defin. not rigid enough....

Speaking about the tail gate...my new 2012 has a tailgate that is at least 1/2 as heavy as my 03. Feels "cheap" in comparison. Hope it holds up.

Your new truck has a torsion spring in the tailgate to counteract its weight and make it easier to open and close. If you remove the tailgate, it's still heavy.

^ Thanks Hawk

Good to know, cause it really feels cheap, even when closing it.

I did see the video a while back, I think the dually is more prone to this issue due to extra added weight on either side of the rear axle. IMHO the tailgate should open no matter what the chassis is doing...

My 2011 tailgate is no lighter than my 2006 was. If anything it feels a little heavier, but I have the step and the gay pole on the tailgate. I know that adds some weight.

I haul alot of gravel, topsoil, etc in my gooseneck dump trailer.and ive been in places that the truck is defenitly in a bind. But my tailgate has opened except once. I do notice the plastic on the catches are getting fairly chewed up. But i expect this for what i put the truck thru. I believe if frame was much more riged i would get stuck more.

This is why there is suspension.

A lot of y'all are really up on the older model super duty trucks. I wonder, isn't the current chassis/frame stiffer than it has ever been? Did they really make it less rigid than an 07 model?

DRW adds no "sprung" weight. Although I would think with the added length from tire to tire that it would actually help minimize the twist.

Were you on un-level ground at the time?
What did you do to get unhooked, I would think goose necks could get anywhere near the height required to lift over the tailgate.

After reading this I went and looked at mine.
The left side looks like it has never helped center the tailgate and the right side has the paint worn through on the tailgate "wedge"

With the limited suspension travel on these trucks some degree of flex on the frame is a benefit to traction when on uneven surfaces since it keeps the tires on the ground. With the frame rails parallel to each other and perpendicular to the tailgate it seems to be the area where you would expect some misalignment on uneven surfaces. I do think they could improve this though with some cross braces between the frame rails. My 06 Ram 2500 Quad Cab LWB 4x4 Cummins did not have this issue at all (granted it had many other worse issues).

I know it doesnt add sprung weight, it adds weight on the outside of the axle which creates a higher torque on the chassis thereby twisting it more than a SRW axle would.

Porthole. Oh yea truck was very unlevel as i have to try and get trailer as close to flat as possible before i dump.i could never get gooseneck over tailgate with over 12,000 lb in dump.i just had to wait till i got truck on some flater ground. Ive got the B&W turnover. So i thought bolting that large mount would be onr heck of a strong crossbrace. I would say its flexing behind the gooseneck. Because i looked at one sidr and overload was pushed down purty far whilr other side wasnt touching.so i can understand it flexing enough.
