Ok, here is the deal tonight I am planning on going and making a very serious inquiry on a new sd with 7.3 on a dealer lot. It has an automatic trans. Are there any drawbacks to the auto trans. Are they short life behind the big diesel? I am a very picky about servicing my vehicles especially automatic overdrives. How about fuel economy what can I expect. It has 373 gears if that helps. I was not going to buy this quick but I found a deal on some very minnor hail damage. I mean I only found three dimples and the window sticker show a price of 30,500. Thats extended cab 4x4 xlt with fx4 package. That sounded like a deal to me. What are you folks opinion. Thank you for your input, Sharps-Nut
What trans is it? The E4OD was problematic to say the least, I have 160k on my 96 F250 4X4 and have gove thriugh 4 trannies. 3.73 gears will help on fuel milage, I get about 18mpg highway(toll roads) @ 70-75mph. but I have 4.10 gears. Price sounds good to me. Most hail damage can be fixed with a "paintless dent removal process". I was very happy when I had a lot of hail damage repaired that way many years ago.
If it's a new truck, then it has the 4R100 which is basically an updated E4OD. The 4R100 seems to be quite reliable, but it also depends on what you are doing with the truck, and how you treat it. An aftermarket cooler and shift improvement will definitely help.
