I think its a great idea. Both companies seem to do really well, have a huge following, and are rarely first out with new industry leading ideas. Working together to reach a kickass goal AND to become leaders in that sense will only boost their followers and sales, especially if the new 9 and 10 speed tranny's prove to be a success!
Each one of the big three has made some pretty crappy trannies.
I dunno why everyone doesnt use allison or eaton's though, thats a good question. Combined they should be able to make something that rivals either company though.
Look at what ford did with the 6.7, directly rivals cummins and the izuzu.
These days it doesnt matter who owns and controls the companies though. Ford and GM are global companies. The days of having much of anything thats pure "north american" are long gone.
I dont know how a company would stay afloat these days if they werent globally ran. Betting they would get swallowed up by Walmart haha.

True, both Ford and GM have been global for a very, very long time. As early as inn 1925 Ford established a manufacturing facility in Yokohama assembling imported Model T kits. Ford has plants in Europe, Asia Pacific, Japan (33.4% stake in Mazda), South America plus Africa and Middle East. Ford Motor Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As far as I know all of their still profits stay in North America.
Although profits are definately spent all over. Shareholders live all over the world!
The days of profits staying in one part of the world are also getting very scarce. I even look at my shopping, probably a good 25 percent of stuff I buy I buy online from the states, Im guessing around 80 percent of the stuff I buy is made overseas somewhere, and who knows who "owns" those companies haha.
Not that it really matters where the profits stay. As long as North America has "stuff" that other countries want, there is still money coming in!
I see what your getting at. Yeah that does hurt local economies. I think thats a little different then the profits staying here though, thats more of the manufacturing aspect of things, and yeah that does hurt.
We can only blame ourselves though. No one wants to go to work for an 8 hour day without having full benefits, good high pay, etc. Its unfortunate for us that those people overseas NEED those jobs and will work for so cheap.
