4x4 Maintenance during summer months

I use a 1987 F-250 4x4 5.0 litre during the winter (4-5 months) for snowplowing. I was just wondering what kind of maintenance I should be doing during the summer months to keep everything in tip top shape for a maintenance-free winter. Also, I was told by a fellow snow plower that I should change the front u-joints just before we get our first snow fall. If I should do this is it a hard job? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you have greaseable U-joints, grease them as much as possible to keep water out of them. Otherwise the water gets in there and freezes them up and end of that. One of the best things you can do is use your 4wd over the summer. Lock the hubs and drive around once a month. That gets everything turning and keeps it loose and lubricated.

Thanks,

We try to grease the front u-joints as much as possible. Especially during winter months. Sometimes I will grease them right after plowing a you should see the water come out! I was wondering about running them maybe once a month. Should I be driving in a straight line down the road? I know that if you drive on pavement and turn you can feel them skipping and that my friends is not good! So maybe just drive down the road in a straight line for how long? And how fast? Thanks!

You don't drive on pavement in 4wd turning or going straight. You can lock the hubs and make everything turn but don't put it in 4wd.

Thanks for the suggestions. Also, since it is very important to have the 4x4 in tip-top shape should I have the hubs and everything serviced in the fall before the snow comes? Also what should I do with the transfer case if anything at all.

You should be all set with the things I told you. You can't really do anything to a transfer case but change the fluid.

Ok, well, thanks again. We just finished our first year of plowing and had no problems. Hope to not have any problems next year or any other year for that matter. Would it be too often or unecessary to change out the front u-joints every other winter just to be safe? They play a big role. How hard are they to change?
