I have an 05 limited with the 6.0 Had the head gaskets redone with the ARP and bulletproof EGR installed, been running pretty good since. It needs the springs replaced and has 82k miles on it. The dealer offered me $18.5 for it on a trade in. I'm considering a new F150 to replace it. I'm torn, I like the Ex and how it holds the family and tows, but I am concerned about increasing costs of repair over time. There is a small oil leak coming from between the tranny and motor, which I am guessing is the main seal, but its only staining where it shows, not dripping.

What do you guys thinK?
That drip is probably not the rear main seal. It could be anything up top as the valley drains down into the back of the motor.
Rear main is not the end of the world and usually (like above) it is something dripping down the back of the engine. Take the converter cover off, spray some degreaser around the area, and take it to the quarter car wash if you have them there, and look for the leak.
+1. Is your Excursion paid off? If not, how much do you owe on it?
If it is; don't be crazy and get in more debt in this economy.
Seriously....
Even if it isn't quite paid off yet, it isn't worth it.
As Darryl'046.0 put it, even though the truck is paid for, you have to make a payment every now and again.
My truck has been paid for since August 2006, though she needs some attention every now and again, it's no reason to get myself into debt either for something newer or because I don't think I need the room anymore.
You've done the studs and EGR delete, the hardest and most expensive parts of owning a 6.0. Anything beyond this is going to be a small minor repair in comparison. As long as you run a coolant filter, an ELC, and keep your fluids, filters, and fuel clean, you'll have a trouble free truck.
Besides you have a family and probably need the room of the X otherwise you wouldn't have one. F150s, though nice, are no comparison as far as room.
I go through this same "quandary" about every 4 to 5 months. I'd really like to have a new(er) F250/350 truck so i could haul the Harley but............ I really like the room the EX gives when i tow the TT.
My '02 has 160k on it and with the mods that have been made, I'm super happy with the performance. Yes there are minor maintenance items to do but then that is always true.
That 6.0 is good for another 150,000 miles easily and I expect my 7.3 to go to 250,000. I'm not interested n a monthly payment NOR the increased Insurance costs, "first scratchitis", loss of the interior space, et al.
It someone would leave me $50,000, I still think I'd hang onto the EX.
I further vote for keeping the Ex. As already said, you have already taken the big hickie--the ARP studs AND the BPD mods. Now you have an engine that will be more reliable and more powerful than almost anything you can buy. Just spend the maintenance budget to keep filters and fluids changed and this baby should not give very many problems.
keep the ex! for around 550 bucks you can add brand new fron v/x codes and brand new rear b/c codes and not ever have to worry about te suspension again. Plus who wants to pay 5-600 a month for a new truck when you wont pay that ayear in maintenance

Hands down, the best reason yet to keep the Ex. Traction will most likely be much better on snow-covered roads with the Ex, which is important, especially since you're in AK. If it's paid off, keep it for sure.
