Weighed the X today

I needed to see exactly what the axle weights were with an empty X, so today I took it to the scale. Now this is with a full tank and no driver, but it really surprises me to see that the rear axle is heavier than the front!

Wow, yours is light. With my 160lb butt in the driver's seat, CAT scale says my 4x4 7.3 is 8200lbs.

That IS surprising. I mean, granted, we dont have diesel engines (v10 for me too) but i never would have guessed that weight distribution. I mean, you even have 4x4!! Holy cow

Thanks for sharing that.

But you have a huge, heavy diesel engine and I think that makes a big difference. Those things are very heavy ( god love 'em).

Some of this has to do with the size of the fuel tank and it's location behind the rear axle. All 260 lbs of gasoline are levering weight off the front axle and onto the rear. With an empty tank I suspect they would be very close. Still a surprise though, as just about every other vehicle I can think of is significantly heavier on the front.

True, but his 7.3L is less than 400 lbs heavier than the 640-lb V10. Not sure about the weight discrepancy. I do know that Cat scales are accurate though, I used to use them frequently when I drove big trucks.

I did mine yesterday as part of working out the hitch system on my trailer.

front 3940
rear 3840
total 7780

1/4 tank of gas.

Those bumpers, winch, and recovery gear are heavy!

I did the calcs on thie rear weight a few years ago. The Ex is 1400 lbs heavier in the rear than a F250. It is all that sheet metal, chairs, upholstery, the gas tank being so far back, etc. that the Ex has on it.

If we take my weight out of it, my f/r weights are 4160/3920, for a total of 8080lbs. Aside from being a 7.3, I can see a few possible things that add weight to mine:

Diesel fuel weighs about 1lb/gal more than gas
Mine has a front grill guard that adds about 60lbs
Mine has 3" side steps rather than running boards, though I bet the difference is less than 25lbs, total
Mine has 285/75 AT tires
I had my receiver hitch in, and it weighs about 40lbs.
Mine has a BTS tranny
Does the 400lb weight differential between the motors account for the intercooler, 2nd battery, turbo, etc?

On the subtraction side, I never carry the third row seat, so that isn't included

Given all this, the difference between mine and the OP's seems roughly correct.

The irritating thing is the 9000lb GVWR. If I get in and add 760lbs of tongue weight, I'm within 200lbs of GVWR. One wife, a couple of bikes and overnight bags and I'm right there, with an empty back seat.

you might be interested in this little tidbit about the Excursions weight ratings.

From the Ford Sorce book for the Excursion 2005:

GVW RATING:
—Lbs. (Computer-selected - not to be advertised)

- 2WD Min. / Max. - 8600/8900
- 4WD Min. / Max. - 8900/9200

Emphasis added..
As you can see, the ACTUAL maximum weight rating for the Diesel 4X4 is 9200 lbs.

There is a kind of "holdback" that the company puts into the ratings. This holdback is a specific amount of weight that is kept in reserve to be filled with the weight of options. The holdback is called the Maximum Allowable Weight.

The numbers are in the sales book 2005.

4X2:

5.4Lv8 -320lb GVWR 8600
6.8LV10 -244lb GVWR 8600
6.0L V8 -0 lb GVWR 8900

4X4:

5.4Lv8 -338lb GVWR 8900
6.8LV10 -270lb GVWR 8900
6.0L V8 -0 lb GVWR 9200

Sneaky devils, aren't they?

Now some of the weight allowance sill be used by the various options that are installed in your vehicle. Sometimes, there is some left over. The Source books list the weight allowance of each option. I was able to calculate the extra available weight on my Ex and it turned out to be something near 180 lbs. Each vehicle is different.

Interesting, eh?

Now, if you really want to twist the needle, then compare that to what the 2001 Excursion source book lists: (note especially the difference between the 6.0 and the 7.3)

4X2:

5.4Lv8 -423lb GVWR 8600
6.8LV10 -425lb GVWR 8600
7.3L V8 -674 lb GVWR 8900

4X4:

5.4Lv8 -486lb GVWR 8900
6.8LV10 -486lb GVWR 8900
7.3L V8 -725 lb GVWR 9200

Mine was weighed last year when I was setting up my trailer. About 3/4 tank of gas and another 100 lbs of camping stuff in the back, with me in the seat.

This is interesting. I have an 01 ex 4x4 ltd with the 7.3 and auto trans. I was thinking it was 9200 based on the door sticker. I must have been looking at the gvwr. I put it on the lift in my Dad's shop and it would not lift it. His lift is rated at 9000. We have truck scales at work. I might have to weigh it.
