when i have my 86 f150 in 4 wheel drive and i turn the wheel more than half way in wither direction it bangs, someone told me this is normal but i don thtink it seems right. i have manually locking hubs and a manualy shifting transfer case. its a 302efi auto. i can thtink of anythign else you need to knwo about the truck. when its in 2h it seems to work fine.
could the joints in your front axle shafts need to be changed out. thats what was wrong with my '84 f150 4x4...when i was in fourwheel drive and cut the wheels to full lock they would bind alittle and make a popping noise...and in two wheel drive you wouldn't notice it because your front axle is not turning.
i hope this helps

I agree with LR, it is most likely your UJs. Because of how the TTB is designed, it is most likely the outer right side UJ that has gone bad. Try to replace it with something you can grease on a regular basis. That keeps the rubber from drying out on the cab seal.
Keep it in 2x4, lock the hubs, crank the wheels, jack up the front end on jack stands, and turn the wheels by hand. Obviously with the engine off. You should be able to see and feel the bad joint. If you can wiggle or bang the cross of the UJ within the cap, then that joint is bad. If you see water or rust coming from the UJ that joint is bad.
you got it, outter passenger side UJ. its trashed o well no biggie. cost liek 13$. i got 186092miles on it and i have a vibration somewhere in like second gear. im thinking new motor and maybe a trans who knows where to get a deal on a motor?
