My question is dealing with a 1999 F150 extended cab 4 wheel drive with a 4.6 Triton engine. My son bought this truck a couple of years ago and has had no problems with it, but two oil changes ago, he had trouble putting his oil filter on. About three weeks ago when he changed the oil again, he asked for my help because it was leaking like a seive around the filter. We tightened it down enought to stop the leak, but there is definatley an issue there. It took all we could do to turn the filter. I think that he has somehow managed to cross thread it. Anyway, I need to fix this, but I am not sure exactly what I am looking for. What is the part called that the oil filter screws on to? Oil filter adapter plate? Something like that? Does anyone on here have a junked 4.6 that they will sell one off of?
I have been researching and it seems, from what I have read, that I can use the adapter off of 4.6's and 5.4's from 1997 thru 2010. I do not know how to verify this. Does anyone believe this to be true?
Have you pulled the filter back off to check the threads and stuff? If you damaged the threads you should be able to see the damage. I've heard of the rubber o-ring getting stuck off of the old oil filter and causing problems when putting the new oil filter on. So that might also be something to look for. You might want to search for "oil filter re-location kit" or something. It should also be a really easy part to find in salvage yard.
There are different oil filter adapters depending on what vehicle the engine was used in and 4x4 or 4x2. Some earlier F150 had the filter in the left fender with oil lines going to the block. Ford updated this style with the filter on the block adapter.
Thanks guys for the input. I will see what I can find. There is a u-pull-it yard about 90 miles from here that I can visit on a saturday morning. Maybe I can find what I need there. I will also watch Ebay.
