Need quick clarification - can spark plugs be changed without removing fuel rail? (4.6L)
I keep getting conflicting answers... I need to change my spark plugs & wires - do I have to remove the fuel rail or not? I have a 4.6L (with coil packs, not COP's). Can anyone set this straight for me please?
On an 02 with COP, I have never removed the fuel rails to change plugs.
Your design is only plug wire ends in the same holes.
It does pay to have the right tools.
Good luck.
never understood the fear in it and have yet to own a 2V that I could do it with the rails on. Two bolts on each side and the rail is off and you have nice straight access. Last 5.4L I did was on a pallet and I had to remove them to get to all the plugs. Probably some of the reason for blown plugs when you have to use swivels to put them back in.
In this thread we are talking about a 4.6 motor and with coil packs.
The 5.4 uses the same heads 'in general' with their plug wells in the same location.
However, the 5.4 block is wider, spacing the heads farther apart and uses a different intake manifold.
This may put the fuel rails over the plug wells and interfere.
Otherwise why upset 16 O ring seals and risk a leak if you don't have to.
The trick to putting plugs back in is to use about 6" or longer new soft 3/4" heater hose that snuggly fits the plugs to start them by hand and feel when the plug is going in straight without cross threading.
Take the plugs down till the hose slips, then get the plug socket in place and finish the job.
