Friend of mine is considering converting his 61 F100 from manual to power steering. I am thinking about doing the same thing on my 1960 F250. Has anyone successfully done this? If so, are there any pics or advise?
There are currently no bolt in conversions for the 61-64 solid axle trucks. There is a power assist available that essentially is a hydraulic ram attached to the axle.
You can also convert to a Mustang II or Dakota weld-in front crossmember and related parts. Or you can cut off the front of the frame and install a Volare or Areostar clip.
I have a 64 f-100. I was pulling parts off of my donner 65 and was looking at the power steering set up on it. Why couldn't one replace all steering mechanisms, drill and bolt on steering gear at proper angle reset angle of steering colum and go with that?? Just wondering.
Thats kinad what I was thinking. New steering shaft, tilt, steering shaft, borgensen or flaming river, and new steering box and linkage. It would take some cut and pasting and lots of engineering but it would make for some sweet steering in the old truck. The inner fender well would need to be cut out and a bracket for the steering box would need to be fabbed.
