I have a 460 with a holley 4180 carb. I,m trying to find out why my engine won,t kick down. I can reach into the fast idle cam and kick it down by moving the cam, but it won,t do it automatically. Does the cam attach to something. right now it does not attach to anything, it may be broken, looks like there is a small hole in the end to attach to something when I look at a picture. If the cam is broken, any idea where I can find a new one.
Thanks for the help!
When you manually push the cam down, will it return back to the fast idle when you tap the gas pedal? If so, then everything is connected and should function. You just need to make sure you are getting power to the choke cap. For a stock configuration I believe it's somewhere around 7-8v with the engine running, aftermarket carbs take 12V. I ran a key-on 12v source to a Holley 4180 without problems.
I don,t manually push the cam until the engine is warm. If the engine is warm then the idle will not increase. If the engine is not warm the idle will return to fast idle. My source for the choke cap is coming from the alternator. I never measured the voltage, but I know the choke is opening as the engine warms. Is it still possible the cap is bad.
Thank you for your help.
Well it sounds like is functioning most of the way. Everything you said so far checks out, so I guess the only thing it doesn't do is kickdown when you hit the gas when the engine is warm?
Or do you mean it doesn't do it automatically? I have seen 4180's with an automatic choke pulloff....
I was playing with mine a little bit and there is no physical connection between the fast idle cam and the choke anyway. It is kind of just pushed around by everything else. I would remove the choke cap and make sure everything in there is free and see if the bi-metal spring on the cap was installed correctly. (You will be able to tell how it goes when you take it appart). If everything checks out you could turn the cap clockwise; which makes the choke come off sooner, maybe yours is a little bit too far?
Thank you very much, I will give that a shot on the weekend here. The pictures are great and much appreciated. At least I know there is not supposed to be any connection to the cam.
Thanks again.
