Truck is in overall pretty good shape but with 243000 miles on it and my son not checking the oil for a month while he borrowed it the motor is seized.
The 460 sure does suck the gas its a 2 wheel drive extended cab long bed.
Money is tight and no sugar momma i'm afraid.
Option 1 - rebuild motor
Option 2 - Reconditioned short block
Option 3 - Sell it for parts and find something else
Option 4 - ?
I used to put over 2000 miles a month on the truck but am driving a company truck for the foreseeable future.
Sell it for parts and buy something newer. While its a nice old truck Im sure, a motor job will run about 3500 or so or more. What you sell it for plus the 3500 or more would sure go to a nice downpayment on a new truck or better newer used truck
If you like the truck, get a boneyard engine and freshen it up- bearings, gaskets, rings, valve guides and seals. Drop it in and you'll be good to go. No way would I ever consider buying a new truck (even one that's 2 yrs old), the prices are astronomical.
Also consider the unforseen costs of a new truck.....like sales tax, property tax, full coverage insurance, etc..
Depending on what you pull and how much, you may consider a swap to a 5.8L. You drive enough miles that gaining a few MPG would be beneficial. I drive 500 miles per week and average 16-18 MPG (unloaded). The 5.8 still has enough power to pull a moderate trailer if needed. Obviously, if you pull/carry heavy loads regularly then you're as well off with the 460.
I agree that a Diesel would be best. If you could find a used PSD in good mechanical shape but with a rough body, you could use parts off yours to make a nice truck.
The 5.8 wouldn't be a bolt in swap, the transmission bellhousing (part of trans case) won't fit. There are other things different but this is the biggie, unless your trans is shot also.
I think I would look in the salvage yards for a fairly low mileage 460. If the truck looks like it has been taken care of and maybe got totaled in a wreck you just might find a deal.
cheapest all around bet is to rebuild the 460 or find a 460 donor thats in good shape. if the truck will survive the lifespan of another motor, it cant get any cheaper all around.
i love 4bt's, and they are perfectly suitable for these trucks. of course, no1 wants to dish out 3k for a diesel swap when they can just rebuild their gasser, but i would . 25mpg vs 10.
