well i bought a 351 off of a friend and it had the harmonic ballancer flew off and broke the timing chain so now i am wondering if i can just go to the salvage and pull one for a 302
are their any differences in the timing chain cover on 351 and 302 motors also on harmonic balancer in any years they were made
What years are the 302 the 351W? Harmonic balancers have stamped ID numbers marked on them, what is the number on yours? The number will be found on the damper, not the pulley.
The balancer is composed of three parts. At the factory, a rubber gasket is placed between the damper and the pulley, then all three parts are pressed together forming a one piece assembly.
The rubber gasket age cracks/shrinks, causing the outer pulley to "walk away" from the inner damper.
not sure what year my motor is early 90 just wondering on the 302 or 351 what years i can use
When a balancer comes apart, only the outer pulley comes off, because the inner damper is bolted to the crankshaft.
Since there are different balancers and you aren't sure what year the engine is, I need the ID number off the damper (will have a 4 digit prefix-6316-and a one or two digit suffix).
Counterbalancers and timing covers will not interchange between these motors, the 351 uses larger main bearings so the timing cover has a larger lower radius, and post 1981 302s have 50oz imbalance while the 351 has always been 28oz.
i know its like a sin on here but im going to have to disagree with you conanski the timing cover doesnt have anything to do with the main bearings it holds the front main seal. and all timing covers are interchangeable between the 289,302, and 351w. the only difference is the coolant flow direction, dipstick placement, and fuel pump boss.

Alrighty. So you made me go confirm this for myself and best I can tell looking at my engines is you're right. I know the oilpans are not interchangable between these motors so I was thinking that affected the front cover too, but it appears the only difference with the oilpans is at the rear main seal while the front seal radius is the same for both motors. Hey.. wasn't the first time I got something wrong and it doesn't really matter to me as long as the guys asking the questions get the correct info.
Which 1965 Mustang 289 timing cover would that be?
1965 Mustang (and etc) 289: There are two different timing covers, two different waterpumps, the parts do not interchange because there are two different engine blocks.
