My wife's 5.4L 3V 2006 Expy started throwing codes (again) this morning on her way to work. She said it was acting like it wanted to stall and idling really rough. When I started it to check the codes I could smell raw gas and got P0175, P0300, P0305 and P0307. This all points to a bad COP, injector and/or plugs on #5 and #7. It had #5 injector changed by the dealer and I replaced all the plugs last year. I took off the oil cap to take a wiff and it seems to have some gas smell. Either way I'm thinking I'm just gonna go ahead and replace all the COPs and injectors on bank 2. I'm now really worried about hydrolock. I'm changing the oil but is there anything else I should do to try and protect the engine from locking up when I next start it up?
Maybe change out the rest of the injectors and change oil and filter before you start it again. That would be what comes to mind. You may as well change the COP's and plugs again also while you have it down. If you think that there is excessive raw fuel in the cylinders, you can pull all of the plugs and spin it over to clear the cylinders of raw fuel.
By "spin it over" you mean crank it over a few times? I want to purge the fuel rail and the only way to do that is to disconnect the fuel pump connector under the dirvers side door, crank it over and wait for it to quit. I've got the new injectors on order and don't want the offending injector to continue dumping fuel from now until the weekend.
EDIT: Pic of #7 plug. It's awash in gas and I can't get a reliable reistance from it. So maybe it's just a fouled plug.
...well replacing the #7 plug didn't help. Still getting P0307 and now P0308 as well. P0175 hasn't resurfaced but I'm still getting a rich smell out of the tail pipe. It must be one (or more) of the injectors.
Saga continues. I found a quick injector leak test that is comprised of lifting up the fuel rail with the injectors still on it and putting a paper towel under the injectors. Then put the car in Start (don't turn it over) and see if any of the injectors spill as the fuel rail comes up to pressure. Sure enough #7 and #8 started dumping fuel. Bunch o' crud. As many know the 05 3v engines have an extended warranty on the injectors because they tend to get stuck in the open position, but not the 2006's. So I'm willing to bet the #8 plug looks like the #7 above. The only good news here is that I still haven't got the Cat Insufficiency code that tells me the cat melted. Hopefully the new injectors will be here in time for the weekend.
UPS delivered 4 new BWD injectors today (at 6pm, guess they need to deliver to their commercial customers first) and I replace all of them on bank 2. Didn't go with the Motorcraft injectors b/c 1) the BWDs looked identical and 2) motorcraft seems to have some issues with their injectors.
Checked the oil, smelled the oil, pressurized the fuel system, checked for leaks (I hate messing with the fuel system), crossed my fingers and started the engine. Started right up and purred like a kitten. Got P0193 which is a fuel rail code, I guess it wasn't fully pressurized. Cleared the code and it didn't come back. Took it for a spin then rechecked for leaks (I hate messing with the fuel system). All seems well.
Glad to hear all is well again. I'm going to be doing the same check on my early 06 as the fuel mileage has dropped off some and I only have 48,500 miles on it. I'm suspecting injector or two. Also will be changing plugs soon as well.
