I know a lot has been posted on blown plugs and I have read several.
My quesiton concerns my 97 150 5.4 165K that blew a plug last week.
Can I drive it 25 miles home after removing the COP and plug or do I need to have it towed?
Ford dealer is of no help.
Asked the servicde rep for ball park cost to repair, he told me 8 hr to change one plug and $25 for the plug.
I said no I want you to repair the blown plug and he said they woud need to see prior to working but cont on at least 8 hrs of labor.
I drove mine about 7 when it went, I think if you unplug the injector it would be ok, not the best for it but not the end of the world. Not sure if I could stand the noise for 25 miles though.
Cost and time to repair it all depend on which plug spit, if it is one of the 4 rears every place I know of says you need to remove the head, if it is one of the front 4, like mine, it was done on the engine and cost me around $200 a few years ago. I know at one time Ford's official response was they are not repairable and the head would have to be replaced.
Galaxie641, Thanks for your reply.
I did remove the COP and plug earlier today.
The COP is split in three pieces, the plug threads are clean and I can not determine if there are a full set of threads in the head or not, eyeballs not to portable.
I can feel a few threads using a thin wire probe, however the plug will not screw back in so I am up to a rethread job.
Lisle tools seems to have the right tool kit 65000 but finding one may be difficult.
I used this kit: Borrowed one from a tech friend for the first one. Bought the kit for the second one. Another option. Ford Triton Spark Plug Repair Kit
I drove my '02 home about 20 miles after blowing a plug last week, about 35-40mph. They have several kits available so you dont have to pull the head. I have already had to tap three holes using Fix-a-Thred part # 98140T. I decided to park it and re tap the remaining 5 plug holes, also replacing the coils. Make sure to grease the grooves in the tap. This helps to collect most of the shavings. Use an air hose to blow out any left in head. I also rigged a hose to my shop vac and stuck it in hole just to be safe. Good luck!
