According to the window sticker for my truck, it has a 38 gallon tank, BUT.......
I know that running these out of fuel is rough on the injectors and probably the pump too, so I dont want to run it dry, but so far, I'm not seeing 38 gallons.
I ran it as low as I dared a couple of days ago - about 20 miles after the fuel light came on, and was only able to put 32 gallons in when I filled it up.
Now, I realize that I wont be able to use ALL of the fuel and actually run it empty, but I've always been able to run my other vehicles down to within a gallon or so of the actual tank capacity. (I dont do it often, but I like to know where I can run it to if I ever need to push it... just in case).
Is this normal for these trucks - to have 5-6 gallons in the tank that is un-usable, or is it just the idiot light for the fuel is coming on really early?
I've never run a Ford dry, so I suspect the reserve is a little bigger than it seems by the low fuel light. I've been able to put 26 gallons in a 29 gallon tank, and I was worried about running out before I made it to a gas station. I did manage to run an 03 chevy 1/2 ton out on the highway, it was about 25 miles after the low fuel light came on, whereas the Ford I can always push it 30-40 miles with no issues, and still have a couple gallons reserve. The other part of it, is the capacity of the tank is with every square inch of the tank full, which is impossible to do. There's always going to be air space at the top of the tank no matter how hard you try to get it completely full. So even if you drained a 38 gallon tank completely dry, I doubt you'd be able to put any more than 36 gallons in it.
