Squeaking steering wheel?

Squeaking is very annoying.

I have a 1986 Ford Ranger 2.3 5-speed.

I guess the "1986" is a dead giveaway as to this truck being somewhat of an antiquity, so it does not surprise me that things have started to creak and squeal.

Am I stuck with this, or is there anything 'safe', I can spray to stop this noise?

WD-40, or Blaster Lubricant, 3-1 Oil? Thank you for restoring my sanity!

I'm surprised that no one has answered this yet. Every 80s Ford I've ever owned did this after many years.

The squeak you are hearing is usually caused by dry horn contacts. They stick out of the turn signal switch and contact slip rings on the steering wheel. The grease dries up and the contacts squeak.

Pull the steering wheel, clean the contacts and apply grease to the slip rings. I use white lithium grease.

is it of any surprise that my 05 ranger does that, too? I can't exactly pull my steering wheel off as easy since I have an airbag...any suggestions?

Your 05 si set up differently. Instead of contacts, you have what is called a clockspring assembly. It's basically a ribbon cable wound inside of a plastic housing.
When they squeak, about the only fix is to replace the clockspring assembly.

Removing the Air Bag is really no big deal. Just don't manhandle it. Disconnect the battery, remove the (usually) 2 bolts holding it onto the steering wheel, unplug the electrical connector and lay it face up on the work bench away from other stuff. Remove the steering wheel as usual.
To be a bit safer, disconnect the yellow cable down on the steering column first. You will need to disconnect it to replace the clockspring anyway. Just plug that connection in last.

"bozoford," there is a bearing at the top of the steering column that may be dry or, at least, the grease has dried out. Pull the steering wheel and see if you can lube it up.

"awright48," your question is legitimate but you would be better off posting it as a new thread. Your question may be missed by someone because it is tacked on to someone elses question. And, what you have done is known as "hijacking" someone elses question. People who do find your question, like "Isrx101," and respond begin to clutter up responses for the original poster.

You are relatively new to FTE so I suggest this to you as a courtesy to others.
