01 XLT Reg cab 2.5L 5spd 240k miles stall/hesitation
Started a couple weeks ago. Haven't driven the truck much as I don't trust it anymore. It has always been a great truck...
All replacement parts are motorcraft or dealership parts...
Plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, transmission fluid, dpfe sensor, battery..
Problem:
drive normally (under any condition - not necessarily under load) and the truck will buck. It's not acting like fuel starvation as everything shuts off instantaneously and then restarts. Will do it a few times in a row.
I attached a pressure gauge to the fuel rail and watched it as I drove, and the pressure never dropped... so I don't think it's fuel related.
I do smell sulfur if it bucks for too long (like fireworks)
No check engine light stays on, but when it 'dies' momentarily, the light does come on. Then when the truck regains conscienceness, the lights goes back out. No other dummy lights come on. I removed the CPS and started the truck, and it will run and hesitate, then act like fuel starvation to shut off... and throw a check engine light until I clear it.
I disconnected the MAF and noticed a rough running difference right away.
I replaced a coil with a new one... same problem. Switched the coils around and still same.
Any ideas of what to check next?
Turns out it was a bad connector on the DPFE. The connector itself looked burnt and when I jiggled it, I could hear some electrical popping noises coming from the fuse panel. When the truck idled while doing this, it would stall immedietly.
Now... where to find a connector.... anyone???
If you're talking about the connector on the cable, you MIGHT be able to find one to splice on. Search for 'pigtails' and DPFE pigtails. I've seen then at some internet suppliers and in a few regular auto stores, but I haven't looked in a while.
