Hey guys newbie here, been hangin in diesel forums for a few years but getn a plan for the ole 57 together.
Im lookin for advice on what front suspension to use. I have the stock straight axle in place now but have done some installs with Mustang 2 suspensions. I plan to lower the truck alot and also will a rack and pinion work with the stock straight axle and or the Mustang 2?
Welcome to our little section of FTE! The Mustang II came stock with rack and pinion steering, both manual and power as an option. That, along with it's high strength combined with compact size made it a natural fit in many early street rods. The design has been expanded and modified by the aftermarket to fit into our "later model" trucks. While I'm not the expert on kit availability to your particular body style, there's bound to be several options available for upgraded front suspension for you.
IMHO, rack and pinion steering has no business installed on a straight axle. It's design is intended to work on an entirely different type and style of suspension (IFS) and steering design, and the compromises that have to be made to have it (so called) work is not right and not safe. IMHO.
Thanks for the heads up! I spent some time workin in a hot rod shop in Alberta back in 2000 while recovering from a back injury. Cool part was the owner and the few employees all had an injury of somekind haha. Was a great experience and I did learn alot but that was 10 years ago and ive been a hotrod diesel junkie for 8 years. I picked up this old merc for nothing and really wanna do somthin cool with it. I couldnt recall what all was involved with the Mustang 2. I may leave the straight axle for now unless I cannot locate a steering box for it. It has everything else including an old 302 and C-4 sitn in it just needs some love and affection. Ill get some pics goin on here asap. Any other ideas?? Im all ears!
