In North America, most states adopt ASTM D975 as their diesel fuel standard and the minimum cetane number is set at 40, with typical values in the 42-45 range. Premium diesels may or may not have higher cetane, depending on the supplier. Premium diesel often use additives to improve CN and lubricity, detergents to clean the fuel injectors and minimize carbon deposits, water dispersants, and other additives depending on geographical and seasonal needs.[citation needed]. California diesel fuel has a minimum cetane of 53.[3]

What is lowest recommended minimum cetane for stock new truck? I am new to all of this and after a discussion with my friendly bulk fuel dealer I feel compelled to add a dram or two of cetane booster to each tankful. It that a good idea?
I do what the local farmers reportedly do for their equipment and they use a LOT of diesel fuel!
I think I will do the same for my small (45hp) hobby farm tractor unless anyone has any better ideas. My tractors have always run fine on plain old bulk off road fuel.
Your thoughts? (I have always run Chevron gasoline in my cars.)
