The more I look around my piles of wheels, the more unsure I am - sorry, John.
I've got 4" centers in 16" wheels that came from a Jeep (at least that's the rig they came from)
My 15" rims from the early 70's thru 86 have 3 1/4" centers. Some aftermarket 15" wheels are 4"ctr. that take a center cap.
The only 15" 'original' rim I can find that fits the old-style hubcap has a 3 1/4" center. This is probably a wheel from a car as the 48-52 pickups came std with 16" wheels
I have no idea where 4 of my bigger wheels came from ('52 F-1), they are steel and have no provision for any type of center hub caps. They are 15" by 8.5" and/or 8", two have a smooth sides and the others have a rib. Both fit both the stock front end and the '60 something 9" in the back perfectly. Then I have some 15s from an 80s van or something, fit with no problems either, can't get to them now and measure though, sorry. But all the newer ones ('48+) seem to be the same for Ford.
'48 and up having a different center hole sounds familiar, but I can't say for sure.
