Why did my motor blow?

Well, my motor blew tonight. The rods got a breath of fresh air via the oil pan.

So I guess I'm looking for a different engine.

I'm kind of confused as to what caused this. I changed the oil regularly at 5,000 mile intervals, used John Deere 15w-40 oil, and always let it warm up before taking off. I did pull some heavy loads (14k trailer included) from time to time. I wasn't easy on it but wasn't abusive either. It had 169,xxx miles on it also, which I didn't think was much.

The only mods I had were air intake, 4 inch exhaust, and a dp tuner.

Sorry to hear that man. Sometimes it happens, and it would be nice to know why. Could be anything from flawed PMR rods from the factory, built on a Friday and somebody didnt do their job, bent pushrod and valve to piston contact, split nozzle causing hyrdolock ect.

Really sorry to hear it. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. You could have had a rod with a bad casting or forging that wasn't found in manufacturing and it eventually gave way. It'd be tough to tell since things can get beat to death from the failure itself.

My intake was just the tymar or do-it-yourself style. Napa #6637 and I just replaced it on Saturday.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. I'll probably just put another engine in it. At least for now I have my 77 F-250 with the cummins. I just hate to drive now with all the salt on the roads. The 77 has less rust than my 01.

I bought the truck in Dec. of 2005 with 86,000 miles on it. So I've had it for just over 5 years and put 80,000 miles on it. It had the stock filter on it when I bought it and I think I started using the diy around summer of 2006.

Being an '01, you might have the infamous powdered metal connecting rods that the '01's and up came with. The earlier 7.3L's had forged rods and were basically bomb-proof from what I've read. It seems to be a hit and miss deal with them... some stock motors blow and some ere running 500HP and have yet to die. When and IF you take it apart, it'd be interesting to see if you've got some broken connecting rods.

You might find out what went wrong when you take it apart, if you are up for the task.

I found taking apart my own blown motor was actually a lot of fun. And when you are in that kind of situation, you might as well make the best of it.
