Going to look at a 302 tomorrow

I'm in the process of looking for a v8 motor to put in my dads 63 F100. I came across a guy that has a 1983 ford Conversion van that he wants $500 for. The van has a 302 sbf that sounds strong but could use a tuneup, an AOD transmission and a 9" rearend.

Does this sound like a good deal? I dont really know what used Ford parts run, but it seems like a bargain.

The van is in pretty decent shape too, but id probably just end up cutting it up and selling the steel.

You will need to convert from front mount to side mount for the install. Carolina Classics in Durham NC 800-598-4211 has the kit to weld in.

Sounds like a good plan to me. The engine & tranny is about all that you can use. That 9" will be a 31 spline while the one in your dads is 28.

If you can keep the engine & tranny connected with the tv cable intact you will come out ahead.

Go for it.

Why would the spline count of the rear prevent me from using it?

I would definitely consider using the seats if they are nice. I like the swap, should be really nice and fuel effiecient too as most conversion vans were meant for highway speeds. With a 302 I am guessing that the van did not do any heavy pulling either. What year is the van? I would probably get it for the parts.

Other great thing with the 302 are the after market upgrades available for them...
it is a motor you can do so much with to improve performance. I have one in my '66
and it's funny, with it's size, there's room, I actually stand in the engine compartment
a lot of times while working on the motor...(not running of course).

TV cable connects from the tranny to the engine and controls the shifting.

The hub to hub measurement is different on the van, the 28 spline axle will not mate up to a 31 spline chunk.
