i tried by pushing inside door handle down. what have i missed?
i know they didn't put key locks on drivers door back then but how do i lock the door?
i looked in search and failed to find anything that covers the answer to this
You have to lock the driver door, and get out through the passenger door. The latch mechanism prevents you from locking yourself out without the key. That is if you lock it with the handle, then shut the door, it will be unlocked.
If it just plain and simply will not lock, a linkage rod has probably been bent by some ham fisted user in the past. That rod is a part of the latch and difficult to repair; a replacement latch will be the easiest fix.
Step 1: get out of the truck and shut the door.
Step 2: insert key into lock cylinder.
Step 3: turn key oppisite way that you would unlock the door, and the door will be locked.

There is no key cylinder on drivers door on his truck.

What kind of smart-a$$ answer is that??! If you're not trying to help the guy,
why bother posting?
Hey Brian, pull the lower access panel and have a look up there with a flashlight...do you see anything out of sorts...?
It should be evident if so...

Left hand door lock cylinders were first offered on 1953 Custom Cabs as standard equipment. Prior trucks had none.
The left door lock cylinder was a factory installed option on Standard Cabs: 1953 thru 1962.
No left door lock cylinder: The idea was that automakers didn't want people standing out in traffic locking/unlocking doors, so most vehicles had none on the left until the late 1940's.
People locked the left door, then slid over the seat and exited the right side. Most streets back then had no painted divider lines, so traffic was chaotic.
1961/67: You push the inside handle forward to lock the doors from the inside.
The only way to lock these doors from the outside is with the key.
1968: Ford introduced door lock *****. To lock these doors, you push the lock **** down, then close the door holding the pushbutton on the handle...in.
Took me a while to figure it out myself, but charliemccraney is correct, provided your mechanism isn't broken. You turn the handle the opposite direction, then get out via the passenger side. If you do it then close the door, it will unlock. You have no choice but to exit and enter via the passenger's side door if you want your driver's side door locked. Again, assuming it isn't broken, obviously.
