89 front diff seal
Good day gents,
my tech manual says to change my front diff pinion seal on my ifs 89 f150 everything has to be reoved from it to achieve a proper torque value on the nut.
Is there no other way, no other torque. I have the lockers uninstalled, wheels off to reduce drag on the diff. There must be a torque value with drive shafts only installed I would think.
Any help on this one is appreciated.

I think the "torque" value your repair manual is referring to is what's called "rotating torque", i.e., how much effort is required to turn over the completed axle assembly. You can measure this rotating torque with an inch-pound torque wrench & the appropriate socket that fits the pinion nut & your torque wrench.
Seasoned mechanics often can "feel" the rotating torque with their hands & then set the pinion nut tightness to the same point that reflects the correct rotating torque after axle assembly. Since all you're looking to do is replace the leaking front seal & not disturb the axle setup, just turn the differential assembly over with your hands [turning the companion flange] and get a "feel" for the rotating torque. Then remove the pinion nut, companion flange & old seal; replace with new seal, then flange, then nut & tighten until you "feel" the correct rotating torque!
Easy to do. Hard part is finding the right tools to remove/replace the pinion nut/companion flange....
