What are the best "Bang-For-Buck" performance upgrades?
- exhaust
- intake
- air filter
- plugs
- cables
- chip
- gears
- pulleys
- ignition
- etc...
Thanks in advance for any advice!
- Change it for the sound, there is no performance to be gained. You can pick up some by running the shorty headers from Summitt.
- intake
- No perfromance to be gained by changing the intake, unless you are talking about a supercharger.
- air filter
- Good quality paper air filters are the best.
- plugs
- The stock Motorcraft plugs are best in this application
- cables
- Are you sure you have ignition wires? Only early 4.6 models had wires as far as I know.
- chip
- You can pick up maybe 10 hp this way but you will have to run premium fuel to do it.
- gears
- What gears does it have? Gears for what, towing, acceleration? Either way there are gearsets readily available for either rear axle. I have tall tires, 3.55s and live at 6000ft. It still works well, the 5.4 has good low end torque.
- pulleys
- I am not sure what your need are but in the winter I often need lights, wipers, front and rear defrost on high at low speeds. You truck can demand a lot of electricity, slowing the alternator results in less electricity. You might get a couple hp in parasitic losses back though. Consider an electric fan from a Taurus sedan. That taks drag off of the engine and keeps the rest stock.
- ignition
- The stock coil packs are good enough for 600 hp Mustangs, they should be OK for the Expy
- etc...
Spend that money on the front end rebuild, good shocks, a fresh set of plugs, coils and injectors. Fluid services, brakes, tires etc. It will run well and last a long time.
