Engine rattle when cold

I've just purchased a 97 expedition with about 40,000 miles on it. Every morning when i start it up it has a very noticable rattle in it. Oil pressure is fine and i called the local dealer and they said it is piston slop which i think is possible because it quits as soon as it warms up. Is this common with this vehicle?

Engine rattle when cold

I have a '97 with 44,000. I have not noticed the rattle you mentioned. If I haven't used the Expy in a week or more, the engine will race quite a bit when I first start it. Perhaps the engine roar is drowning out other sounds; I'll be more attentive to rattles next time.

There have been some posts mentioning piston slap. If you just purchased the vehicle, I would suggest changing the oil. There is no telling what type of oil or the age of the oil that is in the engine. I would use a good quality oil and filter. If it continues, you may want to take it to the dealer or a reputable mechanic and let them listen to it. Good luck.
