I have a 1999 EB Exped / with the 5.4 engine, air suspension, etc... and I've been having problems with the engine stalling and completely cutting out after making right turns. All the internal warning lights come on, i shift the car into neutral and crank the ignition, and the engine fires up immediately. The problem is that this presents a very dangerous situation as this stalling/cutting-out is very intermittent and only when making a right turn. I have never been able to duplicate this problem and the dealer can't read out any stored codes as this is not emissions related. I've verified that gas level is not an issue, water splash onto engine/ignition is not an issue, had the fuel filter replaced. I've been to the dealer and they've spent significant time driving slow/medium/fast while making a right turn and they've never been able to duplicate this problem. I've had this truck stall on me about a dozen times and my wife who drives this car the majority of the time has had this engine stall about a dozen times.
Anyone else with a Ford expedition experienced this stalling? I've had the 2 ignition coil packs go out when the car was at around 12,000 miles. With two new coil packs the car has close to 28,000miles and it still stalls. I don't believe these items are related. Please advise with any suggestions on where I can go to get this problems fixed before somebody rear ends us on the road!!!!!!!
I would check out your drive belt for any signs of wear. My 86 mustang did the same thing for a while until I changed the drive belt and readjusted the belt tension. I believe the belt speed was interferring with the power steering pump operation (I also had to replace aftermarket pulleys taht I used for racing) The problem went right away and the car is just fine now.
Sinve your truck is fairly new I would keep taking it back to Ford until they get sick of you and buy it back or repair the problem correctly.
I hope this helps. I am located in MD and we have lemon laws here. After 3 repairs and the problem still occurs, the dealer must buy back or replace the truck!
I agree. Take it back to the dealer and let them find the problem. If they replaced two of the coil packs, who is to say that some of the others may or may not be on there way out. I know that Ford had problems with the packs on the passenger side. Reguardless of coolant dripping or engine washing or whatever, I would let them check out the coil packs and the rest of the electrical system. Your vehicle cost a lot and it should be proper. Sorry about the rant. My two cents.
How do I know if the drivetrain belts are out of spec. and causing the power steering pump to fail and stalling out the engine? Wouldn't this occur when I make left turns too?
I have an appointment to go to the dealer next week and I will have them check on this issue. Any further insight that I can provide to the service writer would help!!!
You are correct about the turning situation. I don't know why it occurs (the stalling) when you turn left only. I just believe that it is related to your power steering pump.
That is, however ,the extent of my knowledge. I have a 1998 XLT 5.4 with 36K that I just bought last week and so far is problem free.
Whatever you do, stick with one service dealer and document your progress.
If your suv has less then 50,000 miles, you may also want to invest in a 6 year 100,000 mile warranty. or about $1000.00 warrantybynet.com has a bumper to bumper extended warranty.
