crazy electrical problem. please help.

OK. So here's what my 2000 ford explorer 4WD 4.0L OHV is doing. When I turn the key to run the odometer keeps running like it thinks I'm doing 70mph down the highway with the engine off. Then when it was on earlier it kept trying to go full throttle when i wasn't telling it to. the tach and the speedometer kept bouncing up and down (the speedometer kept going from 20mph to 80mph). The brake lights also keep going from bright to dim. I haven't done anything to my car lately. All I did was replace the battery because Autozone tested it and said it had a bad cell in it. It started twice today after getting a jump but now it only clicks. Any ideas where to start?

so I'm looking at the wiring schematic for a 96-99 explorer OHV. the powertrain control module controls the throttle position sensor, the vehicle speed sensor, along with the brake switch. could this be malfunctioning? Is there a way to test and see if this is what it is without replacing it?

Did you clean the battery cable connections and make sure they are tight when you replaced the battery? You'll also want to make sure the grounds are clean and not corroded where they connect to the body and make sure the battery power cable at the fuse/relay panel is clean and tight.

Right. I did all that. I just got in it and there is a clicking sound so something is still hot. I'm thinking its somewhere in the battery cable there is a short maybe. but the cable looks like a wiring harness.
