where's my timing mark?

88 4.9/mazda 5spd. Having some bogging/missing issues so I thought i'd check the timing. hooked my light up to #1 wire and I can't find the mark. There is a notch in the crankshaft which I marked with the trusty paint pen. checked again and still couldn't find the mark. The order on the cap is right 153624. If #1 was in the wrong the spot it wouldn't run worth a !@#$. Help please. It idles fine but bogs really bad until it warms up. Even when its warm and accelerating acceptably when I mash the go pedal it bogs.

Is the timing light flashing ok , when you turn the dist can you see the marks move , bad timing light , timing is way off , balencer has sliped , bring the #1 cylinder to tdc on the compression stroke & look at the marks on the balencer , it should be at TDC....

so when it's bogging it sounds like snapping in the intake. or an exhaust leak but in the intake. Any ideas? coil also has some corrosion on the lead.

That "Notch" isn't the mark you want, be a tad clockwise from it, use a piece of sand paper and find the timing marks stamped into the balancer. You'll see em once you get some of the surface rust cleaned off.

Lookout everyone ******* in the room. wrong notch on the balancer and wrong set of timing marks. Found the little line and found the set of timing marks on the passenger side of the engine. Running much better. Not perfect but acceptable.
