Lane change feature

What year did the automotive companies implement this. On my 77 I have to click the turn signal to get the turn signal to flash.

I like the auto-off feature on the '78 I have. It's only auto-off on the left turn, of course. Sometimes I'm preparing to make a right turn for about four or five miles after the last one.
